Battleltar Galactica: Someone to Watch Over Me

In this episode of Battlestar Galactica Boomer finally rescues Hera from the Galactica, and not a moment to soon. This seems to me like the last place a parent would want to keep their child. The ship is falling apart, full of religious wackos with guns, occasionally people attack the cylons the captain and first mate are drunk most of the time and it appears that the flight leader has lost her mind. They should have moved her to the Cylon ship as soon as it arrived so that she would be safe.
Overall this was an interesting episode and I was impressed by just how much of the story they were able to tell without words. The story itself focused largely on the chief and boomer. I'm not sure that I understand a lot of his decisions lately but I can understand part of this. He found out his child wasn't his child, his wife died, his hope for earth was destroyed, one of the few people in the universe who he felt connected to is in a coma, he is struggling to keep the Galactica in one piece and now the woman he loves appears on the ship, and is going to be executed.
That brings me to the trial of Boomer. She's under arrest for shooting Adama, I get this generally assassination is looked down upon, but calling it a betrayal has always seemed suspect to me. She is a Cylon and once she knew that she attacked her people's enemy in the best way she could, but that brings us to the rebel cylons. So far as I can tell they want to execute her for voting for the other guy. I can disagree with who you vote for but I wouldn't call it treason.
The other half of the episode was Starbuck playing the piano. I don't think there is much doubt now that her father is Danial, meaning that she is a hybrid. She might even be on the path to finding that out, but this made me think of something else.
The vision of her father reminds me of the visions that Baltar has always had of six. This makes me wonder if there might not be some connection between the two events. It seems likely to me that if Kara is half-cylon he could do cylon projection which could explain how she sees this, but that makes me wonder if perhaps we're going to find out that Baltar is a hybrid as well. I'm not sure I like that idea, but I find it interesting.

BattleStar Galactica: Deadlock

If you thought that Ellen Tigh returning to the Battlestar Galactica was going to make things better then you haven't been paying very close attention. Not only are the writers of Galactica unwilling to take the easy way out but it's Ellen, the same woman who spent her previous life drinking and sleeping with half the men on the fleet.
That said, the solution seems to be clear and the Galactica is being infused with cylon cartilage in order to keep it going and it seems quite clear that the message of the show is that the fleet itself needs the cylons too, but it isn't the help that the Cylons are giving them that is the ray of hope it this episode, it is the wall of photos and the conversation between Caprica and Rosyln.
Without resurrection the Cylons really can die. You can see it in Roslyn's eyes when she talks to Caprica and in both of their eyes next to that wall. They want to see them as nothing but machines or at least outsiders but they can't.
I think that is the miracle that they are talking about. Not some great mythical event or a ship of angels that leads them to a simple solution but a miracle that is both much easier and much more difficult a forgiveness on both sides which is profound enough that they can not only work together but move so past forgiveness that it stops being something they even have to think of and they become one and the last line of the episode is the sum of all of Adamas fears and hopes mixed together. "It's already happened."
There is no leaving the fleet for the cylons anymore and no more room for Adama to keep them outside.

A 13th Cylon

I didn't think about it much the first time I watched this episode of Battlestar Galactica but there is no way the writers just dropped in that little bit of information for no reason. A 13th cylon, who was evidently an artist and killed by Al.(Brother Cavill)
This could be a way to make the rebel Cylons more acceptable to the viewer, making one of the others the real bad guy who led them all astray but I suspect it isn't, but if there is another Cylon who would it be.
I think the answer is simple, it's got to be Boxy. Why else would they have put this character in the mini-series except as a way to surprise us when he all returns in the finally to solve the entire problem. the shows writers have said that they would end the show with a bang and I for one can't come up with a more surprising conclusion than if Boxy, probably along with Muffy, the robot dog to save both the Cylons and the humans, except if they were able to use their time traveling motorcycles to go back in time on earth and stop the atomic war, but then the Cylons wouldn't come to the colonies and create the human models and... O.K. no time travel this time.

My Top Sci-fi Couples

In honor of SAD(Singles awareness day) I decided to post my five favorite sci-fi couples.

5. Lois and Clark
When done right this love triangle can be both endearing and really funny. Lois has a crush on Superman but won't give Clark a second look romantically especially after the tenth time he's disappeared at the first sign of danger.
Written wrong Lois is nothing more than the damsel in distress for Superman to rescue once again, but that happens far less than it could because over the years the writers of superman have made Lois a truly strong character who can take care of herself most of the time.

4. Mulder and Scully
Never really a couple(I haven't watched the newest movie, and I'm still waiting for my money back on the first) there was something great about these two from the first moment that they were on screen together. The fact that they are equals both with skills the other needed kept them together at first but as the story grew so did their relationship. That is rare on televising where keeping things the same forever is the generally accepted way to do things.

3. Ron and Hermione
Harry Potter could have been nothing more than a set of adventure books and it still would have been a fine series of books. Not great, but fine. What lifts this above a hundred other kids novels are the characters. Harry has many people around him with strong personalities and watching the change of these two characters from hardly liking each other to happily married is great.

2. President Roslyn and Admiral Adama
On a show which has had so many failed relationships it's great to see something which seems so strong. These are two people who found someone against almost all the odds. Both are too important to the fleet to spend their time indiscriminately dating even if that were possible, but somehow in between the chaos that seems to be daily life on the Battlestar Galactica they realized that they cared for each other.
Of course on Battlestar if precedent stands this will end horribly, and the fact that Roslyn has cancer doesn't bode well, but if they can give each other strength even for a little while perhaps that will be enough for them to save the entire human race.

1. Hans Solo and Princess Leah

There are two things that are missing from the Star Wars prequels, a rouge character like Hans Solo and a female lead that I can buy as being strong. I suspect that Anakin was supposed to be that rouge like character, but he's not and I know that Padama was supposed to be that strong character, but neither had the strength of those that came after(before?) them. I haven't gotten over the "she died because she had nothing to live for" ending of the third Star Wars movie. This is supposed to be a strong character, but she can't stay alive for the twins that she just gave birth to?
Enough complaining about the prequels in and back to the point. This is the classic of opposites attract but there is more to it than that. These two are both strong and smart with goals that don't always match up and enough problems for any ten couples but they have the Ewoks to help so you know things will work out.

BattleStar Galactica: Blood on the Scales

I usually have no trouble writing about TV shows as soon as I watch them but it is impossible to explain how i feel about Battlestar Galactica. From the special effects to the story and even the acting, this episode was a masterpiece. It demonstrated most effectively the depth of the cast on this show. from the cylons, Gaeta and Zarek to the soldiers in the weapons locker and Adama's lawyer and of course the main characters were as expect as ever. Everyone had something to do.
This show has grown from an OK miniseries to one of the best shows on television.
Roslyn may have summed up the theme of this show best when she said that Adama was going to be in control again and he was going to know who was on his side and who wasn't at the end of it. If there was any question of the human and cylon alliance it is over. Adama and Roslyn can't help but trust the cylons now and without anyone to stand against them they will have no trouble getting what they want.
In the end I think that Zarek and Gaeta were exactly what the fleet needed. We went from characters who were completely defeated to characters who are stronger than we have ever seen them. Adama and Roslyn are warriors and they are at their best when there is an enemy, but now we get to see if they can keep that without anyone to fight against.
There are so many great moments in this episode. Most shows that knew they were ending would stop focusing on examining their characters and just wrap up the plot. What is so great about this episode is that they don't. Even Baltar is becoming a better person and I never thought that was possible.

Battlestar Galactica: The Oath

Wow. It's hard to express what happened in this episode of Battlestar Galactica and even harder without spoilers. From the end of the last episode it was clear what was going to happen with Zeric and Gaida but there is something about actually seeing it.
It is also amazing just how quickly the alliances on this show can shift while still making sense. Watching Roslin and Baltar working together felt completely reasonable even though it wasn't all that many episodes where she very nearly killed him and bringing back the moment between Baltar and Gaida was great.
I know I'm rambling and at some point I'll probably put together something more coherent but for now all I can say is that I loved this episode.

V comming back to television

ABC has ordered a pilot for V, the show was last on the air in 1985. I haven't seen much about the new pilot, and only watched the V miniseries, but this seems like part of a trend.
With the success of Battlestar Galactica people are considering the possibility of bringing back updated versions of old shows. V is certainly a prime candidate. It lasted only 19 episodes but is still in the cultural landscape, something that some shows which have lasted far longer can't claim.
For anyone who doesn't know, V stands for visitor and the show is about humans fighting off an alien invasion.
There is still a long path to hoe before this show makes it to Television screens, but a pilot means that the idea is out there and that is something for fans of V.

Battlestar Galactica : A Disquiet That Follows My Soul

Battlestar Galactica is never easy. This week was certainly no exception. The problem is that I don't know who I should be pulling for. Clearly the president has flipped out a little and Adama is certainly pushing the limits of his authority at least it part because of how much he cares for her while Gaida and the vice president have real points.
How can they trust the Cylons after they killed millions in a nuclear attack? It is easiest to side with the people you know the best, but that doesn't mean they are right. Will Cylon technologies on their ships really be better, or will it just give the Cylons a stronger hold over them? Should people have the right to refuse to give the military access to their homes?
I am loving having Galactica back but I don't know what to think about this episode not because it wasn't great but because it wasn't as black and white as most television.
